The USA, Dogville, a small town in the Rocky Mountains, the 1930s, the time of the Great Depression. Dogville’s inhabitants live entirely isolated, far away from civilisation, where roads end, amid remnants of abandoned silver mines. However, the good local people did not abandon their town; they live in a self-contained community with a strict social hierarchy and abide by time-honoured rituals. One day, a beautiful young woman, Grace, suddenly appears in Dogville. Fleeing from gangsters, she seeks refuge. She is taken up by the young man Tom, the local intellectual and the town’s self-appointed spokesperson. Thanks to his intercession, Dogville’s inhabitants accept the girl among them. In return, Grace offers them help. At first, the people are not interested in her services, yet soon no one in Dogville is able to get along without them. As the intensity of the relationship between Grace and Tom grows so do Grace’s work duties. At the moment when the gangsters offer a reward for giving up Grace, the girl becomes a valuable business commodity. Everyone in Dogville now faces the temptation to surrender the girl to her pursuers… Lars von Trier, the creator of the films Breaking the Waves and Dancer in the Dark, shot Dogville in 2003. In an entirely unexpected manner, the director succeeded in combining cinematic and theatre poetics. In the same year, the resulting provocative and widely discussed film was one of the greatest hits at the Cannes Film Festival. The National Theatre adaptation of this famous film will be entrusted to Miroslav Krobot, director and artistic chief of the Dejvice Theatre in Prague.
